The Powerful Names of God
The Bible gives us many powerful names for God. Each one is significant and reveals different aspects, qualities and attributes of His character. These names can help us understand His nature and character better, but they are also powerful when we call on Him by these names in prayer.
This week I have had a need to call on Him by some of these names and so I thought it is a must to share just ten of these powerful names. Of course, there are more names by which we can call God, but this is just a list of ten of my favourite powerful ones.
The Word of God says that the Name of the Lord is like a strong tower and that the righteous can run to it and be saved. Praise God!
“O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your Name I all the earth!” (Psalm 8:9)
“And those who know Your name will put their trust in You.” (Psalm 9:10)
Abba means “Father” and this is one of my personal favourites, especially since I grew up with an absent earthly father. God the Father is always there, He will never forsake us. He is a loving, kind, protective father who cares deeply about our well-being just as an earthly Godly father would. This name speaks of an intimate relationship with God.
Jehovah-Jireh means “God who provides”. Yes, He is our provider and our source of supply. We can trust Him to provide for our needs.
“So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Genesis 22:14
Jehovah- Rapha means “The Lord who heals you”. Yes, He is our healer. He is able to heal all our diseases and infirmities whether they be physical or spiritual. He is able.
He said, “If you listen carefully to the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.” – Exodus 15:26
Jehovah-Nissi means “The Lord is my banner”. To the people of Israel, a banner was representative of deliverance, protection, salvation and victory. The Lord will fight for us. When were are weary and in need of deliverance from a situation we can call on Jehovah-Nissi to help and deliver us and lead us to victory and triumph.
“Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner.” Exodus 17:15
Adonai means “Master” or “Lord”. Adonai speaks of the sovereignty of God. He is our Lord and Master.
“After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” But Abram said, “O Sovereign Lord, what can you give me, since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” Genesis 15:1-2
Jehovah- Shalom means “The Lord is peace”, God can give us a peace that passes all our understanding (Philippians 4:7) when we are in the midst of trials and tribulations. When our natural response should be worry and anxiety, the Lord who is peace can step in and bring us peace even in the midst of the storm.
“Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD and named it The LORD is Peace.” Judges 6:24
Elohim means “God” and refers to God’s great power and strength. He is our creator and God almighty. He is sovereign and mighty.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
8. El Roi
El Roi is another one of my favourite names of God. It simply means “The God who sees”. God is watching over us, He is all over. So, therefore, He knows what is going on with us, whether we are lonely or feel abandoned. It reminds us that God is always close to us and that He cares for us.
“She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” Genesis 16:13
9. El Shaddai
El Shaddai means “God Almighty” or “All-sufficient One”. It reminds us of who and what God is. We can trust in Him. He is all-powerful.
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1
10. El Elyon
El Elyon “God most high”. He is the most high and as such He deserves to be exalted. He is the most high God, He is greater than any and all. He is also greater than any obstacle that we might face so we can trust in our most high God.
“I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.” Psalm 7:17
When we find the need, it is more than comforting to know that we can incorporate these names into our prayers and call on God by these names. He is all that these names incorporate and stand for and so much more! He is everything that we need.
